Phishing scams are happening all around us. Sneaky scammers are able to get our personal information without us even knowing it. Millions of people lose their identity and a lot of money to these scammers every year. How can you protect yourself? I have outlined some ways to spot a phishing scam and keep yourself safe when you are online.
1. If an email is demanding or threatening, dont let it intimidate you. Scammers use this technique to scare you into acting before you think. A legitimate business will never ask you to provide personal information through an email.
2. Call the company, Do not use the phone number provided to you, some scams are sophisticated enough to set up elaborate phone answering systems to make them look more legit. Find the phone number to the company in the phone book or online. Double check by calling or looking up the business in the better business bureau or chamber of commerce in the area that the business is supposed to be in. This might take a few minutes, but how much is your privacy and information safety worth?
3. Beware of downloading or installing unknown software onto your computer. There can be spyware in the download that can put your personal information at risk. If you are in doubt, type in the URL of the website you are going to. Phishing scams use embedded links that take you to their fake sites
4. Always type in the URL of the Web page you need. Phishing schemes depend on embedded links that take you to fake sites.
5. Maintain current anti virus and firewall programs on your computer at all times. It only takes minutes for them to get your personal information.
6. Trust your instincts. If it feels funny to you or sounds to good to be true then it probably is. Scammers depend on that desire or curiosity to get your personal information, don't give in.
Use these tips and your common sense to avoid phishing scams and you can make your online experience a good one. Take extra care to protect your personal information because once it is out there it is very hard to get back.
